Methodology & Caveats

Camera records come from two sources. Community records are submitted by members of the public who observe cameras from public roads and spaces. OpenStreetMap records are imported from the OpenStreetMap ALPR dataset (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL 1.0) and are tagged with source=openstreetmap in the data.

A community camera is marked verified when it has received independent confirmation from multiple reporters. OpenStreetMap-derived cameras start as unverified and can be confirmed by the community over time.

This dataset is not exhaustive. It represents cameras that community members have chosen to report, plus cameras tagged in OpenStreetMap. The true number of ALPR cameras in any given area is likely higher. Treat all counts as a floor, not a ceiling.

Coordinates are provided as reported and may have minor inaccuracies. Cameras may have been removed, relocated, or added since the report date. Always verify on-the-ground before relying on any individual record for time-sensitive purposes.

Who Uses This Data

Journalists

Map surveillance infrastructure in your coverage area. Identify which agencies operate the most cameras. Cross-reference with public records.

Researchers

Analyze spatial distribution of ALPR deployment. Study correlations with demographics, crime rates, or policy decisions.

Advocates & Policy

Quantify surveillance density in your community. Support legislative testimony with data. Build public-facing transparency tools.
